How to maintain a hard wax oiled wooden floor

  • Grit is bad news for any finish on a wooden floor. Walked-in dirt and girt is like rough grade sandpaper to wooden floors. Use a door-mat at every outdoor entrance to catch grit. Vacuum your mats / shake out regularly.
  • Excessive amounts of water and wood don’t mix. Wood is a natural hydroscopic material that swells when it absorbs water and shrinks when it dries. Wipe up spills immediately and never use excessive amounts of water to clean or mop your wooden floor.
  • Do not use rugs with solid rubber or vinyl backings directly on your hardwood floor. Let your floor breath.
  • Stiletto heels can be damaging to hardwood flooring. Spiked heels in disrepair are particularly harmful to your floor.
  • Trim pets’ claws to keep your best friend from scratching your floors.
  • Narrow wheels / glides on furniture legs are also damaging. They can scratch or permanently dent your floor. Spread the weight. Use felt protectors or furniture coasters to prevent scratches and dents.
  • Vacuum regularly and lightly mop using a wood floor cleaner.
